Review – Sally Ann Hayward and Susan Murray media centre’s edinburgh fringe showcases came courtesy of female comics sally ann hayward and local lady, susan murray. hayward took to the stage first and did a free flowing set which moved through several subjects but usually hovered around the relationships theme. there was some strong material with her piece about sainsburys a particular strong point; made all the better with a sainsbury employee in the crowd; and a section near the end on cats also raised a lot of laughs. sadly these were tucked within some very standard material which received a mixed response. when she seems to fly off script and throw in some one line quips hayward seemed at her strongest but this is material that needs work. |
from here matt ------- however, this was not the case when susan murray took to the stage. her show revolves around her lifelong obsession with photo booths and she uses these collected photos of herself, her family, her friends and strangers to tell some incredibly tight and funny material. it is actually hard to pick a high point of murray’s show because it is so well crafted. however, her descriptions of some of the “randoms” will leave you wiping tears from your eyes but if you had to pick a particular high point it is when she talks of her friends, mad ralf, jeff and the druid. the stories are told with a love that just adds to the humour of the piece. when she then moves onto her mother collecting santas you realise that you are seeing a real talent grace the stage. murray isn’t all laughs however and it’s here she shows an often missed side of stand up in that she just tells a great story. the tale of her stalker matt raises some laughs but raises more eyebrows. when she finally produces matt’s present to her it’s not going to bring the house down in laughter but it is going to keep you gripped and wanting more.

BSH Magazine and Open House Magazine i do a lot of biker festivals for the national association of disabled bikers http://www.nabd.org.uk/ and have done for years. they are enormous fun, here are some quotes from various biker publications. "...featuring amongst the other achingly funny acts, susan 'don't rush me, i've got nine points' murray, her lengthy list of awards trailing in her wake." - louise limb, bsh magazine. and here's one from last year's autumn nabd'ness rally in oxfordshire. The Milk Bar End of 2010 Quiz - Episode 81 2 Teams of contestants join us at Molineux to battle it out to win a half price, Santa embossed, Kit Kat and more importantly the pride of knowing they were paying attention to 2010 as it flew by at a frightening pace. 'leicester mercury' thursday february 25th 2007 “unsuccessful search for a boyfriend” susan murray i had a discussion in the pub the other night about whether women could be funny or not. i maintained a lot of my female friends were indeed hilarious (often unintentionally so) and women were just as funny as men. of course we said dawn french first, but then there was the sound of barrels being scraped as someone feebly mentioned jennifer saunders and jo brand. no-one dared pipe up with jenny éclair. i wanted the answer to be yes, but the crux of the argument came when we tried to name funny famous women. maybe the funny women just aren’t up on stages performing, although there was one out in public last night. susan murray was great. her show centred around herself and her unsuccessful search for a boyfriend. that’s dangerous territory and could have resulted in an evening about how rubbish men are and how rubbish men are and – you get the idea. but instead of this we had a multi-media show with web pages, answerphone messages and anecdotes about the perils of singledom and searching for a date. the funny stories and the sheer likableness of susan make the show work. it was like being let in on a chat with a mate about their dating disasters and having a good chuckle about he freaks she met along the way.

"Onto the comedy, and tonight’s opening act was Susan Murray. This was the third time I’ve seen Susan, and tonight’s was the best set I’ve seen her do. Born in Scotland and raised in Wolverhampton (“because my parents wanted me to sound like a twat”), she entertained us with some damn filthy material which went down very well (so to speak). She’s got rid of some of the weaker material that spoiled her act a bit last time I saw her, and has brought in some new stuff that’s incredibly near the knuckle (she does probably the best gag about rape I’ve ever heard, although admittedly there aren’t too many contenders for that particular award). She’s also brave enough to tackle the thorny issue of Muslim fundamentalism (including the real reason why the Burka was invented), and tells us about her experiences with internet dating (for which she was joined by a member of the audience called Diane, who had plenty of horror stories on that score…and I mean, plenty) and being a thirtysomething singleton. There was also an absolutely corking routine about the
state of womens toilets in nightclubs with a pay-off line that had the
back room of the Lescar in hysterics. Far too good to spoil here though.
Female comics get a bit of a rough ride usually, but Susan’s one
of the best out there and is getting better all the time. Good stuff." |
